What we do
MAKEDA SCHOOL FOR ART, MEDIA, AND HUMANITIES is a virtual alternative educational and speculative learning space drawing from progressive education and Black feminist instructional pedagogies. MAKEDA SCHOOL provides unique and high-quality virtual classes, seminars, and workshops grounded in critical theory, arts and humanities, and film and media with an emphasis on Black and Queer Studies. A roster of year-round programs invites participants from around the globe and a wide variety of backgrounds to engage in collective learning in an intimate online environment. MAKEDA SCHOOL aims to complicate the word "school" to encompass a set of values that engage with deep study, critical engagement with the material, collaborative dialogue, and transformative learning as consistent outcomes for all programs. MAKEDA SCHOOL offers sliding scale fees for all classes to foster accessibility and sustainability. Full and partial scholarships are also available on a limited basis.
Testimonials
"It was a great experience to have a remote space overviewing the essentials of filmmaking. It was also really exciting to have the push and encouragement to create something for the sake of practice and learning."

"I really enjoyed this class and learning from everyone else's input. I know reading it with a group was a much richer experience than if I had read it on my own. I looked forward to class every weekend."
